Laser engraving in (precious) metals: done in our studio in Eindhoven
Where we still engrave standard text in the inside of rings with a needle, we now use a laser for Coat of Arms engravings, the engraving of logos, fingerprint engravings and handwriting engravings.
For the engraving of a family coat of arms or logo, we do need an accurate high-resolution image with clear (black and white) contrast for the best result. Preferably in PDF or JPEG format.
In the absence of a digital image, we can often scan and edit an image or fingerprint on paper in order to achieve an engravable image.
*If laser engraving is not possible due to the desired place of engraving, such as on the inside of a ring or on a round surface, then casting might be a solution. Of course, this only applies to the creation of new rings. The engraving can then be processed as a 3-dimensional object in the drawing of the ring and cast as part of the ring. Another advantage of casting is that there are more possibilities for gradual height differences in the engraving, but the disadvantage is that it is slightly less precise than laser engraving.
Engraving in gemstone: a different story
In addition to a completely gold or silver signet ring, a family Coats of arms is traditionally also often engraved in gemstone (A ring with such an engraved gemstone is often called an "Intaglio ring"). Until recently, we also engraved gemstone (blue "layer stone") with the help of a laser engraving specialist in Uden. But laser ingraving in these gemstones with (UV-)laser yielded varying results due to differences in the manufacturing process of the layer stones themselves. According to a local gemstone specialist, the growing popularity of said "blue layer stone" in Germany has caused a number of manufacturers to shorten their manufacturing process, resulting in more and more failed laser engravings.
For the time being, the only reliable way to engrave these gemstones is traditional hand engraving. Something in which a very small group of professionals in Germany is still specialized. We therefore have to outsource engraving in gemstones, often resulting in long waiting times and relatively high prices. It might therefore be better to go to someone else for engraving in gemstones.
