We regularly receive questions about diamond certificates or diamond jewelry.

What does such a certificate actually entail?
In practice, you can distinguish between two types of certificates:

1. Certificate from jeweler/manufacturer upon purchase
   This certificate is provided by the seller of the jewelry or watch. It contains a description of the jewelry and the quality of the diamond, and sometimes also the purchase price.

2. Certificates from specialized third parties
   These are certificates issued by independent, specialized companies that can assess the quality of a piece of jewelry. This is mainly done with expensive gemstones, such as diamonds. Some well-known certifying organizations are IGI, GIA and the HRD (High Council for Diamonds).

What is the value of a certificate?
In general, the bigger and more well-known the name of the issuing agency, the more valuable the certificate. Certificates from specialized third parties such as IGI, GIA or HRD are generally more valued than certificates from the jeweler, whether that jeweler is small or large.

How much does it cost to create a certificate?
A certificate from the jeweler is often provided free of charge when purchasing a piece of jewelry with diamonds. A certificate from IGI, GIA or HRD is usually only provided for larger and more expensive diamonds. Having such a certificate made can vary from a few tens to hundreds of euros, depending on the size and number of diamonds.
